History

Union, New Jersey, has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, it was settled by Europeans in the mid-1600s. The area was known as “Connecticut Farms,” named after settlers from Connecticut. During the American Revolutionary War, Union was a strategic site for both British and American forces, with several battles occurring nearby. The establishment of the railroads in the 19th century spurred growth, making Union an important transportation hub. Today, it is a vibrant township that honors its historical roots while embracing modern development, fostering a strong community spirit.
