Elizabeth, NJ

History

Elizabeth, New Jersey, founded in 1664, is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Originally named after Elizabeth Carteret, the wife of the colony's governor, it played a significant role during the American Revolutionary War as a supply depot. The city grew rapidly in the 19th century, becoming a major industrial hub, particularly known for shipbuilding and manufacturing. Elizabeth was also home to the first organized baseball game in 1846. Today, it reflects a rich cultural diversity, with historic landmarks like the 18th-century Elizabeth Old Academy and vibrant neighborhoods that celebrate its long, storied past.
