History

Scotch Plains, New Jersey, was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans and later settled by Europeans in the late 17th century. Officially incorporated in 1878, the area was named for the Scotch settlers who arrived in the 18th century. It grew as an agricultural community, with farms and mills dotting the landscape. The arrival of the railroad in the 1850s spurred development, making it a popular residential area for commuters to New York City. Today, Scotch Plains retains its suburban charm, featuring parks and a vibrant downtown, while honoring its rich history through local events and community initiatives.
